The youth have spoken – Nissan reveal EV mobility preference in latest survey

The survey, carried out by the think tank Economist Impact, based in the UK, focused on the future mobility choices of young people living in the city.  Among 3,750 participants across 15 urban areas, it was revealed that there was a strong preference for EVs among younger people. 57% were willing to change their travel habits to improve their environmental impact and reduce their carbon footprints in light of their growing concerns over big issues like pollution.

The results also worked to boost Nissan’s push towards extending and strengthening their electrification in their vehicle line-up and reinforce their commitment to creating more sustainable transport solutions to meet the increasing demand for EVs.

The significance of the results

Ritu Bhandari at Economist Impact, said:

“This research explores how younger generations envision the future of mobility – an essential perspective, as their choices will directly shape the evolving mobility landscape. Our findings reveal that for sustainable mobility to succeed, cities need to balance environmental goals with real commuter priorities like affordability, convenience and inclusivity. Achieving this requires flexible, multimodal solutions that seamlessly integrate public transit, electric vehicles, shared mobility and active transport into a connected, accessible network for all residents with diverse needs.”

In addition, Lavanya Wadgaonkar at Nissan, stated:

“We believe in making mobility electrified and sustainable – it is a defining expectation shaping the future of transportation. This survey reaffirms the growing demand for electrification and the need to create more awareness, but long-term success hinges on making EV adoption seamless, practical and cost-effective. At Nissan, we leverage data-driven research and innovation to bridge gaps, ensuring that electrification is not just an option but a core component of the mobility landscape.”

Looking ahead to a future of sustainable driving

Ownership of EVs is expected to increase from 23% today to over 35% in the next decade. In the emerging cities, the motivation for buying an EV was strongest: 44% saw themselves driving an EV in the next five years, compared to 31% in developed cities.

Additionally, regarding interest in aspects such as energy storage, alternative fuels and vehicle-to-everything (V-to-X) technology – more than 40% of participants noted that these forms of technology would be an influencing factor in their mobility decisions.
