First things first, you can power up at home or on the go, and we’re about to run through home and public charging in detail. You can charge your car at any time and in any weather – don’t believe the myth, you can safely charge your EV in the rain!
Home charging
More often than not, you’ll want to charge your vehicle from the comfort of your own home. If you have a driveway or garage, you can install your own specially designed charging point – or alternatively, you can use a standard UK three-pin socket. Charge your electric car like you would your smartphone or laptop – simply plug it in when you get home and it’ll be ready to go the next day. Simple!
Home charging isn’t just convenient – it’s also the cheapest charging method. We recommend contacting your electricity provider to find out about the available tariffs – for example, by charging overnight, you might be able to take advantage of a cheaper tariff.
If you’re leasing your first fully electric car on the Motability Scheme, the Scheme will support you with charging your vehicle by arranging your first home charge-point. They’ll even cover the cost of the charge-point and a standard installation. If you don’t have access to off-street parking or cannot have a home charge-point installed, the Scheme will give you access to the bp pulse network of public charge-points instead.
Charging at work
With EVs increasing in popularity, many businesses are considering installing charging stations on their premises. This is a particularly attractive option for fleet owners, with EVs offering favourable benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax bills.
But, with more drivers choosing electric and plug-in hybrid models for their personal vehicles, having the option to power at work will be viewed as a major benefit to employees.
Public charging
The UK government is committed to an electric future and is continually expanding the UK’s charging network. There are therefore new public charge points popping up every day, so if you regularly drive long distances, it’s easy to find stations along your desired route.
According to EDF Energy, there are now more than 42,000 charge-point connectors across the UK in over 15,500 locations – websites like Zap-Map will help you easily find your nearest.
Octopus Energy have devised a wide-reaching charging roaming network called the Electric Universe. The aim of the scheme is to create more accessibility for EV drivers to over 330,000 chargers across Europe through a single card, a single bill and an easy-to-use app. The offer will be made available to both new EV customers and customers who have already purchased an EV from one of the included Stellantis brands.
